The Call of Cthulu (2005)

I might do a post later on about all the horror movies I've watched this month, but I wanted to do a quick one just for this movie. I picked this DVD up on a whim while I was renting some other stuff for our Halloween Horrorthon this weekend. I had never heard of it, but it's a 45-minute silent film, released last year, based on the H.P. Lovecraft short story. Actually, it's a literal translation of that story to the screen. I find the choice to do it as a silent film odd--the nature of the story requires a lot of information to be conveyed through title cards, which would probably have worked better through voice-over or dialogue--but it works pretty well. It's designed to look more or less like a vintage silent film, and the sets of the sunken city resemble the expressionist sets in The Cabinet of Dr. Calligari.
So where can you get this DVD? Well, if you're in L.A., you can rent it from Jerry's Video Reruns (corner of Franklin and Hillhurst in Los Feliz), or you can order it through the official website, which also offers the CD soundtrack to the musical A Shoggoth on the Roof, Miskatonic University sweatshirts, and CD's of Cthulu-inspired solstice carols).
